The Four Million Homes programme is about supporting positive change in social housing. It gives residents the tools they need – free training, guidance, and information – about their rights and how to stand up for them. It is run by the Confederation of Co-operative Housing, the umbrella body for co-ops in the UK [of which your co-op is a member], and is funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
The programme first launched in April 2023 for two years and has been extended for another year, now running through to March 2026.
The training for 2025/26 includes knowing your social housing rights, the standards your co-operative landlord needs to meet, your co-operative and the law, equality and diversity, how your co-operative spends its money, Awaab’s Law, and complaint handling.
All the training participants receive a Chartered Institute of Housing recognised certificate on completion of the course. Aimed at residents, here at MB Housing we would really recommend that committee members take advantage of this free training as well, as a lot of it impacts on how you run your co-operative, particularly regarding compliance.
The programme also runs a monthly webinar and has done for the last two years. These webinars are excellent for allowing residents to directly engage with senior staff at the Regulator, the Housing Ombudsman and other major housing sectoral organisations. You can also watch back previous webinars here [the one on adaptations is very interesting].
Sign up to the newsletter on their website to keep informed of training and webinars as the programme rolls out.
